Historic Newport Downtown Presents: Cruisin’ on Monmouth Doo-Wop Festival

In an effort to promote Newport’s Historic Shopping District the Downtown Merchants along with the City of Newport will sponsor Cruisin’ on Monmouth. The Historic Downtown Newport area will step back to the 1950’s and 60’s on September 16, 2006.  The classic cars of days-gone-by will again travel along this historic street. Doo-Wop performers & music will help whisk visitors back to the 50’s & 60’s.  Acappella groups and maybe even Elvis will fill the street.

An evening concert staring Richie Johnson’s nationally acclaimed Doo-Wop group, THE STUDENTS will be performing. THE STUDENTS recorded at Chess Records in Chicago, during the 1950’s, and went on to tour with The Chess All-Star Review in 1959 and 1960. The tour also starred such greats as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, The Moonglows, The Monotones, and Etta James. They also toured on Dick Clark's Road Show and appeared at the well known Apollo Theater and Radio City Music Hall.

THE STUDENTS performed this summer in Pittsburgh, PA and Las Vegas, NV at Doo-Wop festivals.  On Saturday, September 16, 2006 they will feature their Billboard Hits:  “I’m So Young”, “My Vow To You” and “Every Day of the Week”.

Cruisin’ on Monmouth will begin at 4:00 pm along Monmouth St. Specific “Classic Car” parking will be marked in the 600, 700 & 800 blocks of Monmouth St. along with the Public parking lot in the 700 block.  A Doo-Wop concert will follow the Cruisin' at 8:00 pm, at the Monmouth Theatre, 636 Monmouth St. Tickets are $8.00 and reservations are suggested.
